When looking at rivers, we only see the water. We often forget about the ground beneath the surface. When contemplating the ground at the bottom of the river, I remember theologian Paul Tillich’s description of God as “the infinite and inexhaustible depth and ground of our being.”6 There is a floor that holds up all rivers. An unchanging base. And as the waters come and go, the ground remains there faithfully. And it is so with God.

This little book is full of metaphors, and all metaphors for God must be held loosely as they but dimly reflect the true image of God, falling as short as our best words. But they are good for the beginning of contemplation and the beginning of the loving glance from creation. Ground beneath the river is but another metaphor (as is the river itself) for what and how God is. God is steady though life flows on. And in some ways the goal of life—the goal of learning to jump in—is to sink to the bottom to the Ground.
